boost guage

I recently installed a boost guage and most of the time, it reads zero or close enough to not matter. If I'm on the hwy at 70 mph it'll run around 8-12 [flat, little hill]. I'm not sure about my guage as I got it on fleabay and it says "blower" not boost guage. Anyway, I ordered a new guage, but, I was wondering what to expect.

On a flat straight at speed you will see between 1 or 2 psi. Any load on the engine...ie acceleration or increase in angle..like going up a hill (more gas pedal) will change the boost accordingly. Depending upon what tunes and air system you have, you might get into the mid 20's if you really get on it. Change out the injectors and now you are into the 30's. Even on a rather steep hill at 70-75 I think I am around 10 or so. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have been to 20 or more as I don't tend to gun it too often.

turbo only makes boost when under load.
when cruising with little or no throttle load, you will not see any or very little boost.

Thanks. Makes me think that that was just a waste of money, getting a boost guage. Well, I didn't spend very much, anyway, so....

Perhaps this is why Ford didn't initially include boost guages as stock equipment on the truck (until the market demanded them)?

Below is an admittedly unrelated but still somewhat vaguely illustrative graph that depicts the decay of boost right with the fall of IPR, ICP, and EBP... as my speed lowered and load decreased.

Top: MAP (boost)
Upper Middle: IPR (duty cycle)
Lower Middle: ICP (HPOP psi)
Bottom: EBP (Exhaust Back Pressure)

Every truck and driving scenario is different, but I get between 3 and 4 PSI boost on the flat at 65 MPH with the cruise control on. Stock max boost is about 17 PSI, but many basic modifications can raise that number. The easiest mod is probably the red-line cap.
