Spring question

I have an 01 Excursion, 4x4, V10 with 130,000 miles. The ride is really rough and as I looked yesterday the front bump stops are sitting on the springs. Looks like there is about 3" of clearance between the bump stops on the rear springs. Never looked before but this doesn't look right to me up front. I took pictures but am not able to attach them at this time, I have asked the moderator for permission. What would be a normal clearance for the front bump stops in the parked position?

Regards,

Mitch

From the service manual, 4.44" front, 4.92" rear. This dimension is metal to metal.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to stop by the Ford shop this afternoon and get an estimate for a spring swap front and back.

I dunno who you asked, but you don't need permission. All you have to do is have your pictures hosted at a website like Photobucket.com and then you'll be able to post pictures here.

As for your springs, there's a ton of spring info in the tech folder. Hours upon hours of reading, information at your fingertips to help you decide how you wanna tackle the POS OEM Excursion springs, including how to replace them yourself if you decide to go that route.

Thanks Stewart for the info. I've been looking through the tech file and your right about the hours of reading. Had the local Ford shop look at the springs yesterday and are getting prices for me, not a job I have time to do myself. My truck has always had a pretty smooth ride on the highway and not much wander issues, it just bangs you around in town and on every little thing the bump stops are hitting and the shocks have no room to work. If I go with the V code up front I think my adjustable Ranchos should still work. Anyway just waiting for the Ford shop to get back to me.

If you like the ride and don't have wander, do the lift shackles to get back the clearance off of the bump stops. It's tons cheaper and you'll retain the same ride characteristics you still have.

Brent's shackle lift thread is in the tech folder too.

Has anyone had their springs re arched? I had a local shop offer it as an alternative to new springs/lift.

Re-arcing is a cheaper way to go but I personally think the spring ends up stiffer than before every time. That might not be a big deal to some but might be to others. My 05' Excursion was lifted approximately 3-4" with an add a leaf and re-arc in the rear and just a re-arc in the front and it was significantly stiffer than stock, front and rear.

For me it was OK because it was either towing or offroading but around town it was enough for passengers to comment on when driving around town.

Thanks for the heads up on the shackle lift thread. I think I will try this first. Where would I look to find these shackles?

Ebay seems to be a good source.

I think Brent bought his there.

Thanks for all the help, looks like a good starting point and a job I can tackle myself.

Ordered the set from Boeschbuilt for $59.95 and they should be here Mon-Tuesday of next week. Will post an update when job is complete. I don't think I will have to lift the back but will deal with that problem if it arises.
