so here i sit i am contemplating about parting my 97 v10 e350 .. vs trying to fix it .. currently i have a craigslist add out locally and if there is enough interest ( getting out what i have put in so far) i will part it and just buy another van) .. ..
van sat for a week .. went to start it up and it had a knock .. sounds like its in the upper part of the motor .. i was going to pull it out and take a look but life got in the way and i had to go to cali.... now i am back but i just want to rest and not ***** with it .. i am giving it two weeks to see if there is enough interest to part it .. otherwise i might just be pulling the motor and seeing whats going on and what it will cost to fix
Could just be a tappet! Too heavy weight of oil can cause the tappets to make noise. The wrong oil filter can cause the oil to "drain" down and allow the tappets to "bleed down" and make noise on start up. An oil and filter change may fix it.
Were it me and this tired of screwing with repairs I'd give it one more go and have someone experienced diagnose the knocking. If that proves to be fatal by all means part it out.
OTOH your asking price of $2500 with the knock seems a bit high given the year etc. You know how those Craig's List hounds would badger the hell out of you for that alone. Even a used motor would run $1,000 plus R&I the existing one---some might think that's just too much for it all.
I'd hate to see you just part it out without knowing its dead---looks to be a nice van from this distance. Ad seems decent enough---then again its Craig's List so who knows?
well i have not done a thing to it and i redid the add but no one here in this area is needing parts.. as many people here are parting these .. anywho it got put on hold due to me having to travel to everet washington and yakima washington every weekend this month .. but i am going to pull the motor out and take a look inside .. see what could be making the noise ... and go from there... if it needs more $$$ put into it than me buying another van ill just but another van and slowly part out this one or wait till i need a second van .. i love this van too ..ugh ..
If it's a knock in the upper end, add a 1/2 a quart of auto trans fluid in it and see what happens. It won't hurt anything and who knows it just might fix your knock.
so here is the issue and back story
1997 E350 v-10 250,000miles.. van ran great and hard like a champ before it was parked .. sat for a week .. started it up and there was a knock ... was thinking about it .. got busy .. a month later i tryed the transmission fluid trick ( one quart of it in the oil) knock still there .. i was thinking it was upper ends .. but the more i hear it it sounds lower end .. so here is a vid of it .. give me your opinion please
watch and let me know what you think ... i really dont want to have to pull the motor and rebuild it or find another one to shove in there .. but i think it might be happining
To this (mostly) untrained ear and not being there in person it sounds more like a valve train issue. I remember hearing something similar when a rocker arm had "eaten" its way through a '77 Olds engines rocket pivot thingy. It too resembled something horrific, also had a bit of the misfiring symptoms.
Have you used a mechanic's stethoscope to more localize this noise?
FWIW I'd also post this in the V10 forum---someone there might know exactly what causes this.
Well THAT doesn't sound good! I've never been experienced with diagnosing noises like that, but it doesn't sound valvetrain related to me. The camshafts spin at half the speed of the crankshaft, and the frequency of the tap seems too high for it to be valvetrain related IMHO.
I could be wrong though, and I hope I am. Your valvetrain is different than the 3V, but this might be helpful:
well tonight i am going to pick up a v-10 motor complete with wiring harness and ecu from a 88,000 mile rollover for $400 that runs .. im going to call it cheap insurance before i pull this one out .. spare parts or just a strait swap .. so we shall see .. ugh i hate it when my vehicals force me to work on them lol
