OK, guys, I'm looking at upgrading my truck to hydroboost. Because it just seems like a really good idea.
However, I'm looking at doing it on the cheap. Which probably means a junk yard Hydroboost unit off something.
Does anyone know of a OEM hydroboost unit which will (mostly) fit/work in our trucks?
I've seen units on Ebay from Mustangs which look similar, but knowing kind of what I'm looking for(power wise) seems important.
Do note that I've got plenty of tools, and am not afraid to cut a few holes in things, lengthen or shorten shafts, etc, just so long as I can make it work.
X2... very easy bolt in, besides the obvious pressure hoses and such you will need the power steering pump reservoir which has a port for fluid return, and as F250 pointed out be sure to get the brake pedal. The pin is in a different place. Hopefully the junkyard F450 that you are picking from has your transmission type (auto or manual). I made the dumb mistake of not getting the pedal and had to pay dearly for one later down the road. There are pics in F250's thread with measurements so you could mod one but it is much preferred to just get it from the booster donor.
I dont mean to hijack, but anyone know if the SD hydro can be shoe-horned in without much effort? No dice on finding used F-super stuff.
The SD hydro is the same size. However, the mounting plate is different so will need to be modified. I think the ports are also different requiring some hose modifications, or custom hoses.
I am useing a SD hydro with a mount plate off a obs chevy. the chevy one got a diff length rod so it take some moding to work. I also am using a saginaw pump but cant seem to source this ford adapter. I am using the chevy line to hydro and sd line to the box
Thanks guys, might be easier to snag one off a SD. Planning to HB when my RSK shows up and i put the SD axles in. I guess my only question now, can you use the factory power steering pump, or do you need a different one?
I tried using the SD setup first, and I re-drilled the holes in the firewall and steering wheel mount. I ended up just turning it in as a core for an OBS setup, it was way easier than dealing with the pain in the ***.
As far as the pedal goes, its not totally necessary, Im not running the HB pedal, and my pedal feel is fine, I don't see any reason to go out of your way to find it. Of course if you can get the whole setup do it.
to me the vac pedal was downright miserable compared to the comfort of the hydro pedal.i knew it was just wrong, wrong, wrong using the vac pedal, right at the time of the swap.i can't stress how delighted i was to find out the discovery of the 9th gen (the 8th gen was known) were in fact different between the vac/hydro too.
call me a sissy lol but driver comfort skyrocketed once i installed the correct pedal.2 years went by using the vac pedal....i just don't wish that on anybody.the difference is so drastic.i strongly encourage everyone with the hydro/vac pedal to correct the pin/swap pedals.im telling ya,you wont regret it.

previously you had to buy motorcraft to get the unit complete with rod.
hmm.he may be mistaken though.says it doesn't fit my '93 F-SD (f450) so not sure what he thought that works for.
yeah,i see nothing to indicate he's correct about the rod nor fitment.

What's the difference, measurement wise?
edit:
Also, can anyone tell me what the fitting types are on the PS pump, and PS gearbox?
I'm pretty sure that when I redo it all, I'll use adaptors and standard SAE 45-deg flare fittings & hydraulic hoses.
Apparently, the fittings and such are good to a working pressure of 2K PSI, so it should be fine.
I put a Super Duty Hydroboost on my '94 Powerstroke. Had to modify the mounting plate on the Firewall, had to modify the pressure hose (Super Duty one doesn't fit into the OBS steering box) and had to modify the length of the push rod on the booster. Took me about a day to work everything out. But it is do-able.
I lucked out and found one in a F450 box truck, was charged the same as a vacuum booster. Bolted right in with no pedal issues at all. Been working great for almost 4 years now.
I replaced my PS pump with the hyrdo one, but the only difference is a fitting on the reservoir neck for the overflow line. Looking back on it, it would be simple enough to drill and tap a hole in the plastic and install a fitting.

I picked one of those up before christmas. The one in my truck has had a slow leak at the pedal pushrod and looked like it was getting worse. I was going to swap it, but the leak stopped and I started looking at new trucks.
According to Autozone it fits an '88 F350, '88 F250, '93 F250 and like 190+ other Fords. (those 3 models are what I've used to look up parts in the past)
It looks just like the one I put on my truck, and it does include rod and spider washer thing that most rebuilds don't have. I was going to compare the two rods when I swapped them, but never got that far... If you know the length of the rod I can measure it.
I lucked out, had some sort of coupon, and the core was only $5 at the time, it ended up being $148 with tax and shipping. Looks like they wised up and the core is $80 now...
Once I get the time, it will end up in the new truck. I just have to figure out what I'm doing with the pump (really want a saginaw in there.. but not sure if I can get one to work with the serpentine belts )
