2wd to 4x4 conversion
From what I have seen is from 1980-1991 standard on the F250 was the D44HD if it was regular cab. D50 was optional. Super cabs got the D50. After 1992 the D50 was standard on all F250s. At least this is what I have noticed in the junk yards and the forums.
It's all about the GVWR of the truck. A regular cab f250 no matter what engine, came standard with the dana44 hd ttb. And this ttb is NOT like the f150 ttb, the axle beams are different, lower balljoints are bigger, brakes are bigger, etc. The 4x4 hubs are the same though.
There have been rumors floating around that the dana 50 ttb could be ordered as a option on the regular cab f250's, but I have never seen any factory literature giving definitive proof. No one has ever took a picture of their regular cab f250 with a 4400lb front axle rating that I have seen(yet).
Extended cab f250's did get the dana 50 standard. Why? Because they are a heavier truck and have a higher GVWR. Also all the f350's from 1980 through 1985.5 had the dana 50 ttb as standard.
Around 1985.5-up, all f350's got the straight axle dana 60. I have heard rumors that Ford was having problems with the ttb in heavy duty applications, such as commercial snowplowing and other high demand situations, so they brought the dana 60 back.
I have a 1992 F250. If you look at the sticker on the door it says my truck is rated at 8600 lbs GVWR and front axle is 3850 lbs GAWR. By this it should have the D44HD correct? When I had the vin checked it states I have the 4400 lb GAWR (D50) with auto locking hubs. Which is what it has under it. Would you have any Idea as to why the door sticker is underrated?
