I have a 1997 f250 7.3. I just replaced the trans with a used one that has 49k on it. ive had it in for a week or so now. everything has been fine until today I was coming home from my army reserve drill about 50 miles. everything was fine until about ten miles to go I saw white smoke coming out from the back. I got off at the next exit, pulled over and there was atf POURING out of the bell housing. what would make this happen? I called the place I bought the trans from and they said it is probably the tourque converter seal? I didn't replace it when I installed it so I think they are right. what else could it be? and where would I get this seal from? and how hard is it to put in?
You should take it back to the place you got it from and pay them to install a new seal, inspect the converter hub and pump bushing. There's a lot a rookie can do to cause them selves trouble on trans pull and put situations. Not knocking you, it's not an easy gig to pull off with all the best equipment, harder when you're not doing it every day.
