I have a 2003 Excursion with no codes yet But it will start up and run good till it gets up to temp then it will just shut down will start back up and then shut down. But after it cools off it will start and run. I am in NC but need to get back to Ohio Please anyone. the only code I have got is for the back pressure sensor I cleaned it and light went out.

 

I assume you have no means to have someone scan and pull existing codes? If not, I would check your ICP by unplugging it and see if your problems clear. By unplugging the ICP it goes into default mode. Look into the electrical connection and see if you see oil inside.

If that doesn't help then maybe try and replacing your CPS. It's a cheap attempt, but I would buy OEM if at all possible.

Worth a shot, but without codes it's a crap shoot.

Lastly, I assume you checked your oil level?

 

yes changed oil 1000 miles ago. where is the ICP and I had the engine light on but after cleaning the back pressure sensor and tube the light went out. am going to try to get code some how. I am in Richlands NC by Camp Lejeune North Carolina. I can't get to parts store to get code with out it shutting down.

 

The ICP sensor can be found on the drivers side head behind the alternator. There is a 3-wire connector plugged into it which is easily removed for inspection.
The Camshaft Position Sensor sounds suspect here. Do you happen to carry a spare? Or do you have means of getting one?

My 2003 7.3L acted just as you describe. It would run for about 10 minutes then shut off. Would not restart until about an hour, then repeat. I was RVing out of town, and really didn't want to have it towed to a shop. So i checked and replaced all of the above more simple fixes, the ICP and then the CPS, myself. Still the same result. Finally broke down and had it towed. They replaced the high pressure oil pump and have not had any trouble since. Although the bill was outrageous. Hope yours isn't as costly.

 

I unplugged the ICP it still died then I replaced the Camshaft position sensor. It is running and not shutting off. I drove it for an hour and got it up to normal heat seems to run like it did before the issue maybe a little better. Thanks guy's!!!!! the only two codes that showed up was when the back pressure sensor was plugged and when I pulled the ICP wire off showed low pressure on the left bank
