well I am in the market for a diesel as I am sick of my 5.4L 4.10 gears, and 10mph not even towing anything. I'ts served it's purpose and still running strong with 286k and I bought it for 1500 bucks a year ago. Anyway about all that is in my budget will be an older truck with a 6.0L. Well after reading up on here I have no fear of buying one even if I have to do some things to it (I can work on about anything thank goodness) From what I understand I should look for something stock, have a scangauge ii handy for test drives, get coolant filter, and do the normal maint. religiously. Am I correct in the above. Thanks again for all of yall's knowledge and being the lab rats for all of us slow pokes to the party.

Sounds like you have been reading up.lol. looks as if you got a pretty good idea what to look out for.
TKS--fixed my profile
Diesel in general has confused me a bit in the past--but this place has enlightened me alot. Not so scary and excessive heat (caused by whatever) is your enemy on these engines--pretty simple best I can tell (but I could be wrong)
As with any used vehicle, buyer beware. The good part is you know what you are up against and a step above a normal owner who has no idea but it looked nice....
Between the Mix of GARBAGE After Market Parts and the Mechanics that have a Negative Value for Common Sense Better be on your A-Game when Looking for one

Hence the main reason I do my research first--I want to know more then they do (which is most of the time anyway it seems) although you can always end up getting a mess--it lessons the chances. I'll be putting back a few grand for the normal fixes when needed--heck I love working on stuff--just don't like the spending money part lol. I do have a question about the scangauge--I was looking at the website and couldn't tell---maybe because my eyes are tired--it does read EOT and ECT correct and those are the two most important to look at to gauge the health of things? Thanks again to all and I am sure will have alot more questions as the process moves forward.
Yes it also reads Trans temp, FICM vp-lp-mp, batteries, map,EBP, load, boost ETC the only thing it wont read is fuel pressure but most have installed the blue spring kit and a gauge to read good luck on your finding and welcome to the Family
