Hey Guys, I am new to this forum. My wife and I recently retired. We are going to buy a used F250 PowerStroke and a tag-a-long camper that weights around 5000lbs. I have heard to stay away from the 6.0 diesel. Can some of you guys enlighten me as to the good and bad points on the 6.0. and 7.3. Thanks, Mike
Both have their good and bad points. No real reason to stay away from the 6.0. Properly maintained and a few preventive measures it will perform just fine. The only advise I can offer off the top of my head is be prepared for the high maintenance costs of owning a Diesel.
There are half dozen good reasons to stay away from the 6.0L, only thing I can think of on a 7.3L is the age and less power but 5K lbs won't even be noticed by it.
Come on over to 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
and get yourself armed with what to look for in the 6.0L
A lot of the expensive stuff won't happen if you do the much less
and reasonable priced things. Cooling system flush. The right oil filter.
The blue spring update for the fuel pressure regulator (it only a 2 beer job).
The biggest thing is keep up on the maintenance and correct filters.
The truck is strong and will run for a long time. The person that uses this nick
run6.0run has over 600K on his and he runs all over the place with trailers.
Looking forward to seeing you in the 6.0L Forum
Also IF you do have a problem we can help you save a lot of money.
All the Super Duty Diesels have there little quirks. For that mater the gas ones also.
And all are strong trucks.
It all comes down to what your going to use it for and how you drive.
^^^ this. Buy an F150 for that small of a trailer. Less maintenance in general than the Super Duty, probably better economy all around, and significantly cheaper than diesel specific maintenance for any of the diesel motors, 7.3 to 6.7.
I pay almost $100 to change my own oil in my 6.0 on a 5k interval, that money would keep my Jeep in fresh oil for 20,000 miles. Maintenance costs are NOT negligible, and you'd be paying all of them for zero performance gains. I towed a 5k trailer in Colorado with a 4.6L Expedition and a 4.0L Ranger, zero issues and plenty of power, even in the mountains. Yes it was easier with my 6.0, but absolutely not necessary at all. To the point I'd say skip the overkill for a trailer that small.
