My driveline has been rebuilt and re-straightened and rebalanced, but that was before I found the axle-wrap. I might have to eat a Quarter Caliber round on that little oversight.

I'm no expert, Scott... but your differential looks like something serious is going on. Here's mine by comparison:

My wife kids me about looking at truck **** all the time... now here we are flashing our a55es.

Why dose this picture look backwards ??

Are you looking at it upside down? Looks fine to me.

Took a trip as far south as Austin TX last summer and did some touring on the way back Grand Canyon, Zion etc. Somewhere around Phoenix AZ I started to hear the rear diff. made it home OK and since I too know next to nothing about gears, I took it to the only shop I trust to work on my truck. They put in new bearings and used the old ring and pinion with a warning that it might make a little noise which will probably go away with a little wear. They were (as usual) right, both about the noise and its already getting better. chief benefit that I noticed is the limited slip works again. (new clutches) No point to make here, just my experience.

Ya I don't know, all I know is that it's not making any noise and no vibration issues. Would you think it could have possibly hit from a steep angle from some off roading on steep and I mean pretty dang steep terrain and then backed off and have not hit sense. Looking at the diff to me (not sure) looks like it rubbed once and nothing sense. Again don't no much about differentials and what i'm thinking is just a guess.

I had all my running gear checked by pros, because I knew nothing until they checked it. You have obvious damage, it's the type that could potentially cause serious (and expensive) damage in the rear end, and I sense that you're rationalizing not "buying insurance". I don't know what a pinion gear costs - but I know that big thing with the grooves cut into it is over $500. That part looks like it's still OK, but if things fail in there - that could be one more thing on top of the rest.

It's also possible the damage was from before you owned it and it was resolved then.

Tugly,

Those guys did a re-gear on my kids Toyota E-lockers several years ago.

They did a good job.

Dropped them off one hunting weekend, picked them up the next.

I spent some time in their shop... these guys are the real deal.

They modded a F450 Superduty (6.0L) into a 4X4 motorhome.
