Traction Bars

What are you guys running for traction aids in the rear end i was thinking about ordering some custom caltracs but they are kinda pricy and don't know how well they would take rocks and mud, the reason i'm asking is i already have some wheel hop issues not all the time but once and a while it will hook really hard and i get wheel hop, now i'm installing 4.56 gears sometime next week and i'm expecting that i will be able to get the wheels hopping basically at will if the ground is sticky enough and i'm not trying to break stuff too badly

also another question, if i put it in 4LO lock the hubs stall out the converter let off the brake and punch it will i break anything like the transfer case?

PS: i can also weld some stuff up but i would rather not do that but if you have some good plans then i might consider it

i have already looked at these and they seem too complicated for me to make http://www.hotrodsandhemis.com/Traction.html

right now i am actually heading over to the farm to weld the axle tubes to the center section (it's an 8.8)

No that's not what you want on an off-road truck, you want something like the Super-Trac traction bars.. Super-Trac Traction Bars · Superlift · www.superlift.com
This bolts to the frame and the top of the spring pack so it's not going to get in the way.

i built my own,
the bar on top of the springs, mainly for off-road clearance

but i was worried about axle wrap still with my set-up so i built my own ladder bars too
my truck mainly sees the sand dunes and a little road time(not worried about clearance)

heres a pic, you can see the top side bar on the far side

hope this help

wow that is amazing i don't have a tubing bender so i don't think that will be an option for me but my god i bet you have NO wheel hop

have enough shocks??

thanks conanski lol coming through again with great advice, is that your truck? do you have any pics of your truck i've never seen any of your trucks posted on here

just looked at the superlift stuff and it's going to be like $300 and i figure i can make it for like 100 bucks and have it be stronger than what they are offering so i might do that but if anyone has anything else let me know

i think spicer recommends no more than 3 degrees(0 being the best), anything above that starts to create more vibration and wear and tear
--we used 1 degree shims to get the angle and then ordered a one piece once we new how much was needed

That is correct, Spicer recommends no more than 3 degrees. That being said, I see a lot of lifted trucks where people obviously did not think about or care to fix their pinion angle. The shims bad96 used are available at any 4-wheel shop, they are pretty cheap, and they are easy to install. It amazes me that so many people leave their pinion angle uncorrected.

know what i do to for correct pinion angle? leave the stock suspension on. and unlifted truck with oversized tires can go just about any place i want to go. especially considering my truck is short wheel base... i do like the idea of trac-bars though.

....That sounds good....I used a one piece 2 deg shim to get my angle of 2deg neg....recomended by calzert racing who makes the bars i run...I just see alot of trucks with a visable angle problem...Thats got to hurt performance...Lew

That looks like it would be fun to make. S othe idea with traction bars is just a bar to hold the rear end/ to the frame to keep the rear end from rotating or movieg? And to have some sort of rubber bushing to absorb a little?

yup that's the idea to keep the rear from rotating and causing wheel hop the problem is that traction bars like those big ones limit suspention movement because the axle goes toward the rear of the truck when the springs are compressed since the shackle is in the rear and the traction bars are fixed with just the bushings to take up slop

actually, the limitations come from the trac-bars inability to flex when only one side of the truck is compressed. the bars travle in an arc as well, pushing the axle towards the rear of the truck. under normal compression, the suspension binding, and thus limitations of travel occur when the arc of the bars pushing on the axle, are not equal to the amount the shackles move backwards.

both will limit travel to some degree,

pick your poison---- axle wrap or less flex
