As I have said many times, I'm seriously considering swapping a manual trans into my 2WD 81 F250. I working on the 351m->400 rebuild right now, but when I was planning this out I thought of getting a Tremec T6060 six speed and the 460 bell housing for it.
My plan for the truck is a restoration with a focus on towing and hauling. I probably would not exceed 6000# towing, and want to be able to haul my 04 Xterra cross country if the need arises.
I guess my question is would this conversion yield enough positive results to be worth the time and effort. I know the ZF 5 speed is a popular swap for our trucks, and this thing is not going to be a race car. Would the two overdrive gears be beneficial even with the 400 turning slow? Or would a ZF or NP435 be a better choice for the application.
Just a quick gear run down on the t6060 I'm thinking: 1st: 2.997, 5th: 0.75, 6th: 0.50.
That's mainly a car tranny. Are you going to be able to get a shifter for it that will work in a truck? 1st gear is not very low either, which means you will need a higher numbered rearend for hauling use.
You don't want the 1:1 NP if driving cross country.
ZF is the easy way out.
Depends on your axle ratio, but should be fine highway towing.
I've trailered to Florida and back many times, even with my 4.10's

I can always make one or modify an existing piece. I have unrestricted access to a basics fabrication shop. It's actually my job in the Army.
I'll check the ratio in the Dana tonight, along with about 30 other things. Between prepping to pull the engine on Saturday and an environmental inspection at work, I'm swamped lately.
