yes, the locks only use one side of the key. The double sided cut was a convenience item. My dad use to do the cut one side for one car, the other side for the other car thing. This cutting of different patterns on each side of key is NOT a factory thing.
So one side is cut for the door and the other for the ignition?
This blew my mind when I read it last night!
Yup, only one side is used in the lock or switch so you can cut one key for two different applications. Sometimes it confuses Ma or Pa Kettle at the local hardware store when you ask them to flip the key and cut the sides different. As much as I like to patronize the local store it's easier to have them made at Walmart where they just stick the key in the machine and it guides off each side of the original. Of course you can't mix and match round and square head keys since they are offset differently.
Not sure about the trucks but some Broncos had a different key for door and ignition.
My Bronco is a single key operation. But I did hear one time a long time ago that Ford did offer and double key operation on these trucks as an option. I didn't post that earlier because I don't really know if that is true or not.
Also I just wonder how many of us still have the original aluminum keys for these trucks. I only have the ignition/door keys in aluminum for both my 78 150 and my Bronco. But sadly I don't have the glove box key or the key for the locking center console in my Bronco. Eventually I will have those made though. Not sure if I can get aluminum key blanks or not though.
