None of the older vehicles I've worked on have used separate keys for the doors and ignition. Someone probably changed your door locks or ignition switch and didn't bother doing it properly.

All three of my dentsides have/had square keys. I know the cars had separate keys in the 60's and both of my Rangers did/do have separate keys, I cannot remember if my 82 F150 had separate keys but I think it did. I am just wondering when the trucks changed to Ford "normal" or is there still single keys for doors, ignition, and glovebox?

My '75 has two keys, though it's not supposed to. I have my keys cut with one pattern on each side so I only need one key. I unlock the door then flip the key 180* for the ignition.

I did that with cutting one side of my square key for my 76 F250 and cut the other side for the ignition of my (wifes') 90 Ranger

79 and older the doors and ignition as well as the interior hood lock use the same key. The glove box lock, bedside toolbox lock, and locking gas caps use separate keys. 80-96 and 98 on the heavy 250/350 trucks use separate keys for the doors and ignition. The locking glove box on these trucks also use the door key.

Not sure about the trucks but some Broncos had a different key for door and ignition.

my 78 had 4 keys.....one for the ignition.... one for the doors... one for the lockable hood release.. and finally a locking gas cap key......i broke off my lockable hood release a month or two after i got it and kept it in my tool box for sentimental reasons and about 6 months ago a buddy purchased a 79 swb 4x4 with no key for $500 and of all my keys i have saved over the years it was the hood release key that worked the ignition on the 4x4... makes you wonder how many different keys were actually made and used.... i know i have 10 keys and those cover a big bulk of all bumps and dents i have ever played with it just makes me wonder maybe thats a Numberdummy question

that is funny, Speaking of, one MRO that I worked at had about 4 or 5 hundred people and there were several of us that had enough Craftsman toolbox keys to open most any box that someone needed to get into. There seems to be about 10 keys that will fit 95% of all of the old style boxes

My 73 had one square key for ignition and round same size for glove box.
Old Blue 79 I square doors/ing.
New Blue 78 1 square doors/ing
Red 79 1 square doors/ing, 1 round for glove box (I added the lock)
Silver 77 1 square doors/ing

Bronco spare tire Ford lock and small Ford key
Locking hood latch square key

#2 flat tip started the Farm Ford, we finally toggle switched it one day after we needed the screwdriver for something else.

Where I hide my spare key........the secret key spot, where else.

To my knowledge, all gloveboxes that locked used the round key. With my experience, the transition between the square door key and the round door key took several years, and really has no method. If your truck has different kryd for ign and door but are square, they should be the same key.

So one side is cut for the door and the other for the ignition?

This blew my mind when I read it last night!
