I have a 1978 F-250 with a D-44 in it. I'm replacing it with a D-60 from84. I know how to modify the spring mounts on the frame for the new width of the axle. I'm not sure how to make the steering work. I have a forward push pull gearbox but the new axle needs a left to right motion. what is the easiest way to fix this can I rotate the pitman arm on my gearbox? Thanks for any help.
Sell that D60 and spend the extra cash on the correct one. Just curiosu why you want to go from the D44 to the D60? Yes there is bigger ujoints and bigger inner axles but the outer shafts are the same diameter on both units.
Unless you are constantly breaking something the upgrade isn't getting you much. I went from a D44 to D60 because I found one for next to nothing but all it really is is a discussion point/bragging rights with others. "Oh nice...you have the D60 front end!"
You are going to spend more time and money trying to make that 84 D60 work than it is worth. The drivers side spring mount is cast into the center section, so if you use it the axle will be off center to the passenger side.
If you try and center it you are going to have to rig your leaf springs up which I don't even want to think about the concerns associated with that. Then add your steering dilema.
I just don't like the sounds of it all to save a few hundred dollars if you are lucky.
I have broken everything in the front end of that d 44. Every axle more than once and the ring and pinion. 39.5 tires power lock diff and about 500 hp not good for a d44. Every pro I talked to about better axles ect.. all told me move up to d60. Randys ring, Mosser and a few off road shops said I would break d44 chrome molly axles and if not then the ring would blow up. I need to move the springs out 2.5 inches each side and I know the easy way to do that. just not sure about the steering. Looked at randys ring and a d44 weighs 4.2 lbs and a d60 weighs about 8lbs for the outer stub shafts.
I cant remember if the pitman arm has an index key in it. It may not. Worse case if it does you could shave them down to clock it 90 degrees? I don't know if splines from the steering box are keyed. It might not be but likely is so operators at the factory cannot put the pitman arm on incorrectly.
You would then need something like this below. it is a high arm kit for rock crawling. I could not specifically find it for Ford but they might be able to make one for you.
