Hello everybody this site has been very helpful to me so I figured it was time to stop lurking and join in, I am I. The process of putting a new intake with a 4 barrel on (using a clifford intake) using the efi split exhaust and possibly a efi head I heard somewhere that they are significantly better than the stock 86 ones anyone that can vouch for this? Thanks in advance for any help
There are several guys on here who have modified their sixes, hopefully they will come by. I do know from reading their posts, it's not as easy as a v8 and the results may improve it, but it's still a old long stroke six. That's not a bad thing when talking about a truck, but don't expect it to ever win any races.
I just saw an article on Bangshift the other day where a guy built a 300, stuck headers and 3 4 barrels on it and then fused together a pair of Chevy LS heads on it and it ran strong enough to run down big blocks in a drag.

After doing some research I decided to have it upgraded for a little more power. Due to my lack of mechanical skills the actual work was done by my friend, a retired mechanic.
Here’s what was installed:
Offenhauser DP intake
Holley 390 cfm carb
EFI exhaust manifolds
HEI DUI distributor
2.5” exhaust system
How much of a difference did all of this make? At lower speeds not so much; most of the improvement was at higher rpms. Freeway driving became a lot easier. Was it worth it? To me, yes. It suits my needs perfectly: mostly backroads with the occasional short freeway drive.
Thank you for the help that is exactly what I'm doing but without the new distributor and a clifford intake.how do you like that carb? That's the same one I am thinking about throwing on their it is the only thing I have left to get

If you have the stock distributor that does not have the vacuum line going to it, you HAVE TO change it out.
Hm well looks like I missed that little bit of information in my research not questioning you guys on this knowing you guys know more than me but what is the reason you must change the distributor?
Originally, the 1986 4.9L came with a "feedback" system. The distributor and carburetor were controlled by the computer. If any part of this system was removed or disabled, the distributor was locked @ 10 degree BTDC and the carburetor went into a rich mode. Terrible for economy and power!
You are ready to replace the carburetor, so the distributor will need to be retrofitted with one from 1983 and down. It is called Duraspark and is original to Ford. There are other ways as well. Use the "search" feature and read about Duraspark conversions.
Thank you for the help everybody really appreciate it Saving me tons if headaches will possibly be going junkyard hunting this weekend now jut to find one with all the parts I need
