A few weeks ago I started hearing a rattling noise. I found out I accidentally had the truck still in 4h and drove around like that for a couple weeks. I shifted it into 2h and the rattling stopped. Now a few weeks later I started to hear it again but this time I crawled underneath and found this.
I don't know much about trucks but it seems to me that the transfer case is leaking. Could it be a seal or something more serious? I'm also unsure of the rattling noise. The rattle happens when I'm accelerating, decelerating and even coasting.
When it was in 4Hi all that time, were the hubs locked or free when you discovered it?
At minuimum, I'ld check level by pulling fill plug and using something to dip, like little finger if it'll fit ..... or a bent stick if not. Proper fill is bottom edge of fill plug (higher than drain plug).
My NP205 also could use a seal and gasket R&R as well as front and rear C-6 transmission seals. Likely when I R&R engine. Meantime, I will keep an eye on levels.

The hubs were free but it was making the rattling noise and when I shifted the truck back into 2h where it should have been the noise stopped.
