Engine Guys

Ok I started a thread about an 1984 F250 with a 351 Windsor. I got good information and will be doing body work for a good while. In the mean time how far should I go on the motor. It has 185,000 miles I want to have enough power to carry the truck with a 36 inch tire. The gears are 410 with a manual 4 speed. Should I just bite the bullet and do everything or freshen the bottom and do bolt on products up top.

Oh it ran when parked but hasn't run I 3 years. I primed oil um and added new gas and just cranked t and checked under valve cover off pumping up to top. It does have bad fuel pump.

If it has 185,000 miles it's probably a good idea to go through the bottom end and have the heads reworked, or replaced. How clean is it under the valve covers?

It was pretty clean it had a ton of miles but was well taken care of. It was parked when they got a new truck. I'm just hoping I can get away with minor work on the bottom end I don't want to get into a stroker crank and all that. New rings and bearings I would be fine with.

As far as bearings, the most it'll need is the crank turned and undersized bearings installed. But that may not be needed. As far as rings, if the bore wear is very minimal an overbore may not even be needed either. I'd recommend a aftermarket Comp cam though.

What is your intent for the truck? what RPM range will you be spending most of your time in? I'm taking MPG isn't a whole lot of a concern with this truck with 4.11's and 36" tires?

The truck is a hobby I have an 11 DD. It will be a weekender and its mudding days are gone. RPM range I'm looking at 5500 give or take.

Oh figure somewhere around 2500 and down if the tires and gears allow.

Here's the cam I'd recommend for that, if anyone else has a better cam they know about. Chime in.

COMP Cams: Xtreme Energy™, XE256H <BR> Strong Torque, Through Low End and Mid-Range, Good Idle

I have the mildest XE cam, the XE250H and it's very torquey. This one should fit the bill better for you since you're turning faster RPM's and have bigger tires than mine ever will.
