bad sign.
Well I have my truck torn down. Trans is being built, and I decided to replace my engine gaskets {302}. The pass. side exh.manifold was broken at the last cyl. I took off both valve covers, and the dvr side head has oil on the rockers and the cover likewise is slick. The pass. side is hard baked on oil deposits, very dry/burnt. I was hoping not to have to rebuild the motor also.

If the motor was running good and not using oil,just clean the stuff out the best you can. I just had the valve covers off of my 95 5.0 with 158,000 miles and it had some build up on the passenger side valve cover also,but the engine runs fine. I cleaned it all out. Make sure you replace the pcv valve and make sure all hoses to the pcv are clear and not clogged up. might not hurt to change the oil a couple times at 500 or so mile intervals to help clean it out,or you could use an engine flush,but i don't trust those very much,fresh oil will clean it up after a few changes.
