Nice (looking) Excursion in NWI

Sadly after reading roof crush tests, static stability factors and crash tests on the Excursion we have decided against purchasing one. We will be going with the Expedition or Expedition El. Anyhow around the time i came to this conclusion, a guy out here by me, finally called me back to view his 7.3L Diesel Excursion. We wont be going to look at it, but the guy is very nice, seems like it could be a good deal, so if anyone is looking to puchase in NorthWest Indiana area, i would gladly pass along his info!

Its also a southern truck-NO RUST!

Not like an Excursion will.

Roof strength test

The Excursion was never designed nor tested to the standards that more modern, lighter duty SUVs are. Not to start a debate, but compare rollover photos of Expeditions and Excursions next time you get the chance, the difference is staggering.

true...and a Expedition cannot handle even a portion of the weight and trailering ability of the Excursion

it's a trade-off. I had a 2008 Expy EL Limited and it was a very nice vehicle. I'll take my Excursion over that any day of the week. The only thing the Expy had over the X clearly was ride comfort. Even the mpg's around town are close enough to be the same IMO. 12 mpg in Expy...9-10 mpg in X

that power lift-gate was pretty nifty though

Those tests, even though conducted by the IIHS, does not compare to real world accidents. If a vehicle rolls over it will not have 100% of it's weight placed on the roof. And if it did it would be spread out over the entire area. Unless it fell off a cliff and landed square on the ground i wouldn't even consider it an issue.

There are hundreds of thousands of people with dead family members from rollover accidents who most certainly DO consider it an issue.

But don't just take my word for it. The attached chart can be found in THIS REPORT by the IIHS.

In a nutshell, the Excursion has a death rate of over double that of the Expedition in single vehicle rollover accidents. Yeah, you could say that can die in a rollover in ANY kind of vehicle, just as much as you can say that crash tests and safety ratings don't matter.

Oh wait...

Yeah, it matters.

Cool chart but what do the numbers mean?

BTW I try NOT to roll my vehicles.

Read through the article single vehicle, multiple vehicle, single rollover.

What I found interesting was the massive differences in rollover deaths in the 4x4's vs 2wd.

The REAL story should be don't drive a 2wd they WILL kill you and the 2wd blazer is crazy 386% increase over the 4x4

See page 7, it's the total number of reported fatalities per million vehicle registered years. So 77 rollover deaths per million annual vehicle registrations.

The 2WD vs 4WD is odd to me, I would have guessed it would be the other way around due to higher CG, thus easier to roll. Wonder why the big difference.

As for Excursion's, the 2WD must be the safest, it doesn't even make the list. I read that to mean ZERO.

I was surprised by the numbers too when I looked I assumed they were the opposite of what they are.

Personally I don't put too much stock in these numbers, the problem with the numbers is they are skewed by the people driving them look at the top list and look at the bottom list and picture the person you would expect to be driving them.
