I guess I have an edge here, I've been in IIHS quite a few times, have a buddy that sets up the cameras, and have talked to a number of the people there as well, and have asked specifically about these tests.
Bottom line is, the numbers you see from tests, and the results you see from tests, are eye candy, not real world.
I have worked hundreds of accidents in my time in fire/rescue. I have never seen a vehicle land dead nuts flat on it's roof without any rotation. I've worked fatalities in armored vehicles, and I've worked them in a BMW. ( for information purposes, the 2 that died in the armored truck were just as dead as the folks in other fatal accidents, and the exterior vehicle damage was marker lights and paint).
And i wouldn't take a Sienna if it was given to me. Not against minivans as i have a T&C.
You can't technically fit 11 people and an ice chest in the passengers seat in an Excursion either.
Why are we all arguing over this? The OP opted out of buying an Excursion... who cares? I don't think anyone here actually believes Excursions are invincible? Accidents put your life at risk no matter what you're driving.
I guess if someone has a history of rolling vehicles over, it would be a concern.

And that's great. But don't you find that a bit anecdotal to vindicate the risks of a vehicle during rollover? What would you say to the myriad articles out there of people being killed in rollover accidents in Excursions? Or ANY vehicle, for that matter?
Can you honestly look at once accident and say "now THAT'S a safe vehicle" and ignore everything else? There are lots of really safe cars out there, and there are lots whose safety record is well below average. But you can't tell that about any vehicle from reading a tale of a single accident.
I wonder if Excursion owners/drivers are the demographic of people that don't wear seat belts???
