I have a '12 f350 currently running 275/70/18 bFG's all terrains and I was looking to go a little bigger tire to a Toyo open country AT 285/75/18. With that said would there be more play in the sidewall of the taller tire and would it be noticeable? I tow a 33ft jayco eagle 314bds that weights @9000 lbs so I don't want to sacrifice performance just to get a larger tire. Thoughts on the size, brand, and tread type would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
You are only gaining about a 1" in tire height so I don't think you will notice anything different. Just keep you tire pressure up there and you will be fine..
it's load range E so I would think you're good to go. A few years back I put some Geolander A/T D tires on my F350, for everyday it was fine, but when I filled the box with topsoil, it wallowed like a whale
Does the 2012's still get it's speed from the tranny? I though all the newer vehicles get it's speed info from the wheel sensors? If so, you won't see a speedo error.
It'll still have a speedo error since you'll be traveling further with each revolution of the tires.
I towed with 315/75R16 tires, and wouldn't go that route again. The wider tires like to wander, but it's not as noticeable just going down the road. Once you get a trailer behind you, though, it'll amplify that wander and yank you around if you're not paying close attention. The taller sidewalls will make it a bit more "mushy" closer to the max tire rating, but as long as they are fully aired up it should be ok. Make sure the rims are good for the pressure the tires call for, many rims are only rated for 50psi.
Between the two sizes in the toyo AT the difference is only 1.7". Half that is the additional sidewall you'll have.
Remember, people have been towing without issue for decades on 7.50R16 which have more sidewall between the wheel and road.
