Hi all,
hopefully an easy one for ya's. I have a '98 f-150 4x4 s-cab, etc. with a broken 3rd brake light(worker hit it with something). I ordered a new light and went to install it, but seems i need to take out my headliner to do so.
Is that the case? please let me know either way. I either need to know that I need to take it out, or that I can reach the harness above the headliner w/o ruining it.
I will greatly appreciate the info.
OB
I think I'm gonna answer your question with a stupid question. What is the headliner? I know how to replace the third brake light on my 97 but dont know anything of any headliner.
Hi F150 AZ,
First, there is no such thing as a stupid question...lol.
The headliner I'm referring to is the one inside my cab. The wiring harness for the 3rd brake light unit goes through the cab and plugs in somewhere under the headliner.
My question is: can I get to where it plugs in under the headliner without removing the headliner? If not, what size Torx bit do I need to get the seat belts off so that I can remove the headliner?
First off, did you try to get to the wiring harness from the outside of the cab? I have had my 3rd light apart a couple of times but never really rooted around in there to see where the harness is. I'm pretty sure you can access it from the outside but if not, then the torx bit number is 55. I had my seats out an stuff a while ago and that's the size you'll need.
I had my 3rd brake light out to put in the Lightning LED unit. Mine is a 2001, so it may be different. The plug is pretty far in, but I was able to get to it by popping out the 2 plastic fasteners and the side panels holding the headliner up. Did NOT need to loosen the belt harness.
I have Scab and if you don't have a back window slider it is a pain to change. I had to pull out the seat back and the side panels above the seat back. Then, remove the coat hooks and carefully pull down the back of the head liner. There is a connector in the center of the roof under the headliner.
All set!!!
Truck had to go to the dealers today because another ford dealer f***cked up my front end. When I was there I asked about it. Tech had a great idea......since the harness was good, and i just needed to change the plastic that was broken, they just left the harness in and switched out the plastic(yes, i'm an idiot)
So all set on that front. I appreciate all the input
It was an education. I spilled touch up paint on the lens and it etched the lens while trying to clean it (long story). It would probably been OK, but the truck was new. I can't wait to get home tonight and look at the old assembly.
Sorry you had to go through all the trouble Pete. Sometimes I wish I woulda stayed in the common sense line when they were handin it out. After the tech said it, I said YEAH! that makes sense!!!!! And I kept the new harness just in case it went bad. Plus, I have all those new bulbs too!!! WOOOHOOOOO....LOL
