Arrow 02 To 07 Explorer Transmission

These trucks come with the 5R55S Or The 5R55W transmission can anyone tell me the difference or why there is Two numbers. Is one better than the other? I am also aware of the E & N series which are different but not used after 01.

There is a gear ratio change between the two, there are two ratios for the overdrive section. 5R55S is the Short ratio and the 5R55W is the Wide ratio. I dont think one is stronger than the other, they both brake bands, wear the servo bores, and have converter issues. They cannot be interchanged the computer would not like it.

5R55S --------- 5R55W
1st - 3.22 ------ 1st - 3.22
2nd - 2.29 ------ 2nd - 2.41
3rd - 1.55 ------ 3rd - 1.55
4th - 1.00 ------ 4th - 1.00
5th - 0.71 ------ 5th - 0.75
Rev - 3.07 ------ Rev - 3.07

The 5R55N is a lot alike the S/W, it has a couple of extra parts and different ratios as well. I am not sure what the "N" stands for on those.

The 5R55E is similar but completely different, no interchangeability of its parts.

So, do the 4.0s have the same transmissions? Or are they completely different?

There is a code on the driver door post or door that you can look up on the net which should tell you if it is a E, S, Or W.
