i have a question on the topic of the axle gears, seeing that i couldn't find the tag on the rear end, i looked on the sticker on the driver's side of the door pillar. this is all i could find relating to the axle. {TRANS (E) and {AXLE (18)} can anyone explain what this means? i tell ya when you try to find info on your vechicle, you don't get clear cut info from the identifaction stickers. hope someone can help explain this. thanks. T.C.M.

I'm pretty sure that is 3.08 gearing without LS on that truck. I use to have a pretty similar truck with 3.08s and pretty sure it was the same axle code.

thanks for the info, any advice on the other code? which is the trans E. does this stand for the E4OD transmission? i aslo was wondering if you read my last post about the mini spool for the axle? i found this on the Jeg's parts web site. i was wondering if you would know anything about it, and if so if you could give me any advice on if it would be a possible option to go with instead of welding the gears. thanks. T.C.M.

Yes you have the e40d tranny. You don't want a mini spool or a welded diff on a street driven truck especially an 8.8 ford rear end.

Best option is to find a donor rear end with LS already in it, lots of them around for relatively cheap prices.

ok thaks for clearing that up, now i know when i go to get replacement parts, such as filters etc, i can tell them what kind of tranny is in my truck. are these types of trannys reliable?

ok now for the axle part, so a mini spool, welding, or anythink of that sort is out of the question for street purposes. as for this ls model rear end, when looking for a donor, are my options limited to trucks only? or does some rear wheel drive cars, such as the crown vic, will work as well? or does it have a bigger gears? any info you can provide or ideas of what to look for would be great thanks. T.C.M.

You'll want to stick to the F150 8.8" rear axle.

Hey, just checking in here. I was wondering about the rear axle issue. I know that you suggested that i stick with the f150s rear ends regaurding the LS models, but i was reading up on some things, and seems like the 8.8s are pretty much the same except for the width. If i wanted to keep my original casing, would i be able to just swap in the gears for LS MODEL? If so what would recomend i replace as bearings, shims etc.. go, once or if i go this route. i was thinking that whatever the decision, i shoud freshen up the bearings and such. would you agree or disagree on this? look forward to your opinons and advice on this. Thanks. T.C.M.

Yes, you can install a LSD and different gears into your stock housing.

hey guys, back again for a little more info. i've beed searching through the web trying to find a LS diff for my f150, a few times now i've came across what is called a traction loc posi diff. is this any different from a LS? if so, i could i also use this in my truck and still use it as a daily driver? also these traction loc diffs, are they durable?

A Traction-Lok diff IS a LSD. In fact, it's the optional factory LSD for your truck. You can absolutely use one in a daily driver application.

just making sure that's all. i watched a video about the ls diff and there where 2 types mentioned, one was with a S spring, and the other was with 4 springs with a clutch pack. i had a buddy of mine inform me of where i could find a LS diff, but it's out of a 98 ford f150. it has a 8.8 with a 31 spline axle. so this should fit my housing right? I can't use the 98 cause one side is bent, so i figured i would use the diff from it. if it's all same, i was planning on removing everything from the 98 housing and putting it in mine, just so that i can be sure everything matches up. now if i do this, i will have to set the preload and adjust everything again right? is any site you could direct me to on how this is done?
thanks. T.C.M.

Yes, a 8.8" 31-spline carrier will fit your stock axles. There are numerous write-ups on setting up a 8.8" diff.

8.8 Axle Gear Install

Install Gears and a Limited Slip in a Ford 8.8 - Car Craft

It isn't a job I'd suggest for a beginner.

OT, I know, but every time I come in here and see this thread title, all I can picture is you popping the hood on your truck only to find this:
