My ID plate inside the driver door shows a VIN # F14HRY80182 which has always made sense to me as the truck is a F150 4WD with what I always thought was a 351M. Has the 8 valve cover bolts and everything else to indicate 351M. Everything else on the truck agrees with the information on the ID plate.
I was crawling around under the truck today and checked on the engine casting number and found D1AE-6015-A2C cast on the passenger side above the starter. I Googled this and found that I might have a 400 manufactured in 1973.
I will be out of town the next two days so I won't be able to look closer at things like stroke and intake deck height until I get back Friday. Can you tell the difference between a 351M and a 400 by inspecting the balancer? Anyone know anything about this block.

D1 is 1971, so I doubt this is a 1973 engine. You need to find the casting date code. Once it's decoded, figure at least 3 months before the completed engine was installed in a vehicle.
Casting numbers are foundry marks only, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers, are usually worthless for identifying the size of the engine or what vehicles it was installed in.
The original 1977/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco 351M/400 block casting number is: D7TE-6015-AB or A1B or A2B
