Hello, I just bought a 77 f150 a few weeks ago. The person I bought it from said it has a 351m in it. I checked the vin numbers and it should have a 351. I was looking under the hood and saw on the valve cover 400 ci. Can i match block numbers to see if this is correct, if I can where are they?
Thanks,
Gregg
Sounds like you have a 400. It is the same motor as a 351M except it has a longer stroke. If the water neck is bolted to the block, you have a 351M/400. The label on the valve cover should read 351M/400 , and below that it will read 351 C.I.D., or 400 C.I.D.
Block casting numbers are on the lower right (passenger) side of the block near the starter but since the 351M and 400 both use the same block it isn't going to tell you much. Unfortunately the only 100% positive way to tell if you have a 351M or 400 is to drop the oil pan and check the casting numbers on the crank.
Thanks for the info. The label on the valve cover reads as you said cartwright and it reads 400 cid. Maybe it is a 400, the oil pans is leaking a bit I'll drop it and see what the numbers are on the crank. Where can I id them?
