So was heading home from school when I smelled a burning smell and then noticed I lost power steering.... Then a few seconds later I looked at the temp gauge. Not good..... at 230 degrees I did a 5 lane changed and threw it in neutral and turned the engine off and coasted to a stop on the side of the freeway. I have no idea how hot the engine got But I let the electric fans run and jumped out and popped the hood. I find both serpentine belts shredded...
What happened was in the march performance serpentine kit they give you the pulleys and bolts. Welll apparently their bolts suck because the pulley attached to the harmonic balancer sheered off the bolts Looking at the bolts in pieces they don't look hardened or grade 8 at all soo im a little annoyed.
Anything I should look for before starting it again once the new belts are on and the pulley mounded again with ARP bolts this time? Idk how hot it got. Brand new 428. Im really p***ed right now.....
You have my sympathy SuperDuty93! I know I'd be hot too if that happened to me. Hopefully the motor didn't suffer any head gasket damage from getting a little warm.
It sucks to pay big bucks for what should be the best kit out there and then get some sub standard hardware with it to cause this catastrophic failure. Not sure if you have 3 or 4 bolts but for all of them to shear like that I'd wonder if there is not some alignment problem that lead to the stress. Usually if a bolt will fail it will be in tension. Is it possible they were not torqued properly or not at all and backed out?
If you somehow still have the bolt heads, I'd get a bolt place like Fastenal to maybe inspect them for you, then pass along your findings to March Performance.
How about the tensioner(s)? Was there a way to measure proper tension?
Wow man, that really sucks. Sorry to hear about that. I don't have much advice on what to check, the only experience I have with a gas motor getting hot was in a Dodge. That thing blew a radiator hose and ran for more than a few seconds and was just fine. Anyway, given that it was just a few seconds and you killed it quick everything should be okay hopefully (knock on wood)
230* your fine. Pushing it but fine. I'd replace all the bolts in that kit with quality fasteners. I would be pist as hell though. What's that kit cost like $500.00. I would deffinately call or send them a nasty gram for sure.

Hey thanks. No I was there and did the bolts. there is 3 of them. They had lovk tight on them and were torqued down and all. Not over or under torqued. One must have been bad and when it broke the out of balance broke the others Im for sure having them looked at because this is an expensive kit

Well that's when I say it... I think it hit 280 before it started to cool Idk though. Didn't hear any weird noises and nothing blew up so lets see what happens tomorrow. And I called them today and tried to keep my temper but I was so on edge I think I scared the guy on the other end of the phone.lol
