Wife has a 2012 Escape with the V-6 with a recommendation that oil be changed every 8,000 km. It is under the Ford maintenance plan and they are using 5w20 ford oil, the unit only has 34,000km. When checking the oil it smells sour which in my experience means a varnished engine. It seems the 8,000km is to long and I have been changing it half way between at 4,000km and it still smells sour. Who packages ford oil in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com</st1:country-region><ST1Canada</ST1? Has any one else had this problem? Thinking of changing over to Shell or one of the other main manufactures but the dealer recommends staying with Ford. Any thoughts?
oil sample [lab report] is the best tool to judge oil change intervals & quality of oil.your going to get a lot of opinions on what flavor of oil to use, sampling will prove which oil will have the best service life.
Could be fuel dilution if it has a faulty/runny nose fuel injector, or if its driven short distances in cold weather, which wouldn't have the engine get up to full hot operating temps, or long enough so the PCV system could properly vent the crankcase of blow by fumes, unburned fuel that gets past the rings, or if its a direct injection engine, maybe even more so with fuel dilution being a problem.
In both cases a weekly 20-40 KM or longer trip if its really cold, out & back may help as it might be long enough to get the engine & oil up to operating temp long enough to purge the crankcase.
As has been suggested, an oil analysis could spot a fuel dilution problem & any wear problems it may be causing.
