Is it just my truck or does anyone else's 2014 F250 tailgate not lay flat? It's like they made the cables too short. There's definitely clearance to go further between the tailgate and the bumper. I don't get it.
The tail gate on my truck lays flat when open. I think that the shorter cables may be to keep the backup alarm from sounding off.. My 2013 F250 will go off continuously if I have the tailgate down. When i put lumber in it and can't close the tail gate and then back up..... it goes off continuously...
The backup system can easily be turned off with the push of a button (though I can't get it to stay off). Screwing up the tailgate is quite a strange fix to that problem.
Mine is a 2012, when the gate is down it lays I would say about 98% flat, just a very slight rise. I have about 5/8 of an inch clearance to the bumper.
With me not having really any experience with back up alarms at least on the Super Duty's, why would the tailgate cause the back up alarm to continuously go off, is this a safety feature or something ?

was curious after you mentioned it,, just went out on my 2014 to see. Mine is like 98% down,, very slight arch but I have to attribute that to the Tailgate Step..you got to keep the tailgate from being flexed to the bumper,,i surely wouldn't want my tailgate getting dented by me using the tailgate step..
the tailgate on my '13 doesn't lay flat either. It's kind of odd to me that Ford sends them out that way since there is plenty of room for it to lay perfectly flat, unless it has something to do with the hinges coming unhooked if it goes down any farther.
My 2011 is flat as far as I noticed. Never tried to lay a piece of wood from the bed to the tailgate to check it to 100% flatness. I got the backup camera and rear sensors but not the tailgate step.
Count me in also as someone with a 2014 that the tailgate doesn't lay flat.
I figured at first that maybe Ford is accounting for eventual stretching of the cables and it'll flatten out over time, but the 20 year old tailgate on my other truck lays as flat today as it did on day 1, and the cables appear to be the same thickness.
Maybe it's to account for weight, like (Go Big Or Go Home) said.
Mine doesn't have the step, but standing on it or putting other weight on it such as bags of sakcrete when loading it, or even more so loading a riding mower or four wheeler, the slightly shorter cables may allow for give so the tailgate is not mashed into the bumper.
You can always bring this up the next time you're at your dealership for a maintenance visit. The service manager will be happy to check out your truck and see if the tailgate is within spec. As always, I'm here to do what I can to help, so feel free to give me a shout via PM if you need my assistance.
I am a general contractor who just purchased the F350 for a work truck. It seam ridiculous that ford screwed this up. If I try to carry anything over 8' it only contacts the truck at two points, the front of the bed and the tailgate. This means the tailgate carry's 50% of the load! I spoke to my dealer who had no explanation and suggested I purchase longer cables. WTF!!! I just spent 64K on this truck and you want me to fix it!
I noticed this loading 8-10' steel I-beams in the bed. I cringed at every bump in the road waiting for the tailgate to kink.
I emailed Ford directly, over a week ago, looking for an explanation but as of yet have not hear back.

I'm afraid the only reply you would get is either "because it's cheaper" or "because we, at Ford, are idiots". I imagine we'll have to fix it ourselves.
