For the second time in less than a month my truck is at the dealer! This time the truck lost the right rear stop and turn signal along with the right trailer signal. The right front and mirror still work? Dealer says the BCM is fried and will have a new one in tomorrow. I am wondering if the wire that was grounding out a month ago has something to do with the failure? Thank God for warranty!!!!
The BCM can temporary or permanently disable an output because of excessive current draw (such as a short to ground). A DTC code is thrown by the BCM, but usually only the dealer’s scanner can read it. I’m assuming that your dealer scanned your truck and the code said that the BCM has to be replaced. All the lights you mentioned are from the same BCM output except the trailer lights, that BCM output energises the trailer light relay in the BJB, to protect the BCM from bad trailer wiring. Also a good reason for owner’s to know what their doing when adding electrical loads to the truck and where they are getting the power from.
Ask the dealer what code was thrown. I think U1000:?? Is temporarydisabled and U3000:?? Is the BCM has to be replaced.
The wire you mentioned that was grounding out probably started the chain of events, the BCM tried to protect itself electronically but now has decided to disable the output permanently to protect the other circuits till you can get the BCM replaced.
Can you confirm that the front signals are not part of the BCM functions? I was told this and quite honestly if the warranty was up I would be running a wire from the front to make it work?
The front signals are also controlled by the BCM. Also have the same fuse F13 feeding them. If you ran a wire from that output to run the backlights, the BCM most like would think there is a problem and disable it. Also the BCM looks for not enough current draw then designed and can tell you that a bulb is burnt out. More and more vehicles are run by computer modules. Fore xample the window switch sends a low voltage data signal to a module and that module sends the data on a CAN BUS Network and the BCM’s output sends 12 volts to the window motor. The BCM also sends less power to your headlights for daytime running lights (DRL). It is the same way your H&S minimax gets and sends information. It is the same way my $5 phone App tells me my engine fluid temperatures. I assume that your Dealer confirmed that the cause of the BCM to failwas caused by a problem with the truck, that is why they are covering the cost. This is why it is so important to understand new vehicle wiring methods when adding aftermarket accessories.

So I got the truck back today with a new Body Control Module replaced under warranty. The Tech thought the wire that was grounding out a couple weeks ago could have caused the failure. I sure hope that is the end of the wiring issues for a long time!!! With less than 3K left under warranty it is a little worrisome!
