My 96 F150's inside driver door handle just stopped working. It moves slightly, like 1/8", and I can hear something click back toward the latch, but that's it. I have to roll down the window and use the exterior handle to open the door.
I've found quite a few posts talking about cables breaking and the sheet metal tearing but they all sound like the handle moves freely, which would be different.
Does this sound familiar?
I'd have already removed the door panel but we're having another cold spell. Just hoping to learn what I'm in for when the weather improves. Thanks.
Had a similar problem on my driver door. If you remove the door panel and follow the cable to the lock mechanism you will feel a soft vinyl like cover that is snapped around the door lock actuator. I removed that and sprayed it real good with TRI-FLOW. Works better then new
That cover can trap moisture and it`s downhill from there.
PS: If you find that your cable is sticking, there is a really cool gadget we use on motor cyles made to lubricate cables. The product is called "cable life" and comes with a can of special lubricant and a trick little tool to force the lube into the cable housing. Cost 12 bucks and last forever.
There is a round flat rubber pad with a thingy (I won't say titty) in the middle that acts as a cushion for the metal part that the handle is attached to rest on. This also acts to keep the handle raised slightly. When it falls off (it is about the size of a nickel?) it lets the mechanism overtravel. This makes pulling the handle very hard until you get the mechanism back to where is was meant to rest. This may not make sense but I think you will figure out what I mean when you take off the door panel and inspect the handle and latch mechanism. Look at the passenger side and see if you can identify the rubber pad I'm talking about, then look at your driver's door to see if it missing. If it is, go ahead a pull a little harder on the handle...I ran a bolt in the hole where the washer thingy went and let the latch rest on the bolt head. Someday I'll find that dang rubber piece and put it back in.
