OK guys maybe I'm a little late on this but had a flat the other day and when I went to pull the wheel off the right rear the axle came out with it....at least till the caliper stopped it. This is on a 02 Supercrew and you guessed it ...just out of warranty, when I pulled the back cover off the C-clip on the passenger side was gone...I don't mean just not on the axle...there wasn't one in the housing. The spider gears were eaten up so looks to me like this was left off at the factory. I cleaned the housing out good and checked it good so I know the clip's not in there wasn't much metal and what was there was obviously from the spider gears. Anyway to get to the point I was gonna go with a lock right diff because of price I don't need a extremely rugged limited slip cause the only time I'll really use it is when backing a trailer when its wet. Jegs needs to know what kind of rearend it is to get the lock right. I've got the tag #s and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the info to identify the rear. The truck has the 5.4 and towing package if that'll make any difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Later Whit
I wouldn't get the lock right. I would consider it a heavy duty limited slip, because its actually a locker. So if you don't go off road at least once a week, its too much rear for you.
I got the OE ford limited slip carrier for mine and it was a little more difficult to replace, but I am much happier with that vs the lock right. The ford unit was also a lot cheaper. $350 for the lock right vs $200 for the ford unit.
Limited slips are a pain when they are in the front.....they are OK in the back if you can engage your e-brake when you need the axle locked. Otherwise, I'd get a full detroit or some sort of selectable locker.
Thats why they are called limited slips and not lockers. You can't expect something to do what its not designed to do, that is a limited slip that will lock up automatically.
For getting off of a boat ramp, a detriot is kinda overkill. But its all in what you want. Chances are he has the 9.75 rear and they don't make a detroit for that. They do make a more agressive Eaton 4 spring limited slip that should provide better performance than an OE model.
I was just letting him know. If they are similar in price....then get a lunchbox locker. I wheel the crap outta my jeep and it has a detroit EZ in the front and that thing is awesome. I dont pull any boats with it.
Those lunchbox lockers are easy as hell to install also.
Hey guys, thanks for the replies, the truck is a 2 wheel drive....use it to pull a trailer fairly regularly and never can tell when I'm gonna need a little extra traction getting in tight spots. I don't really want to go with an extremely aggressive locker for this reason, 98 percent of my driving is on pavement or pretty good dirt roads, its just that occasional muddy road or uphill backup to load a vehicle that I'm concerned with. Everyone I've talked to needed the axle spline count and ring gear diameter (Summit said it was to new and no one on their list had anything) to tell if they could get a limitslip for it and I wasn't sure how to decode the tag...thanks for the diagram Racerguy.....I'm gonna make some calls tomorrow and if they can't get one I guess I'll end up going with new spider gears and keep relying on redneck skill in the bad spots (or the winch on the trailer). Thanks again for the help. Later Whit

Its a tough call somtimes. Guys really put the pressure on me to get the lock right since it was about all that was available for mine besides the OE design. I couldn't get a detroit because they don't make a semi float one for the 10.25. The lock right was great traction, but I never go off road, I was just tired of spinning the inside wheel all the time. I was also afraid changing the rear would be too difficult, and while it wasn't easy it wasn't that bad either.
The limited slip was just a better choice for me, and it would have been nice to get it first as I couldn't return the lock right and took quite a loss on it. If I wheeled even once a month the lock right would have been better but I don't. I've just heard the arugument that limited slips suck because they don't lock up, which is kinda the point and what kept me from getting it originally
Well......LS's arent bad if you have the ability to force them to lock when you need it. I have a front Detroit and LS in the back and I just hafta pull the e-brake to get traction when I need it. The LS is nicer on the rear tires than a full locker.
BTW, the detroit EZ is not noticable at all on the street........except for the ticking during turns.
