Unhappy Check engine light on, need help

Help. I own a '98 250 5.4 4x4 lariat (awesome truck). It has not been in the shop yet, minor electrical problems I fixed myself (I'm no mechanic so resort to trial and error) but I'm stuck. The check engine light went on and won't shut off even after a tune up. I had an aquaintance plug in a scanner and he said i was getting code p1451 'Evap System Vent Control Valve'. He also said it was the reason for my poor fuel economy(running very rich, using warm-up fuel ratio's at normal operating temp.). What's wrong and how do I fix it. I want to avoid costly shop fees. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Also, kudo's to all the awesome rides that have been put together. I was given some ideas for my own truck but rest assured it'll still be very unique.

Check engine light on, need help

There are a couple of fairly common problems that cause a P1451.
First is the wiring to the canister vent solenoid is pulled apart. Next would be the vent solenoid itself is shot. It is under the box of the truck, behind the rear diff.

Thanks Racerguy. Problem solved. Pulled the solenoid (along w/ canister) and couldn't remove the wire harness. I ended up tearing the wires out of the connector by accident and Ford doesn't supply a repair end for this harness, off to the wrecking yard. This was definitely my problem though. I finally got the connectors apart and found what I suspect to be carbon ash. The pins were completely disintigrated. Good news was I found the problem. Thanks again and I hope this thread can help anyone w/ the same problem.
Lariat001 over and out......Happy CANADA DAY
