Took my '06 F350 to a local shop to get brake repairs done. It needed front and rear pads and discs, rear calipers, rear brake backer plates, emergency brake cable, upper and lower ball joints, front axle outer seals, and alignment. The total came to just over $3000. The labor alone was $900. I was surprised. I just wanted your opinions as to if this was a bit high or not? The truck has 53,000 miles on it, and I do intend to keep it for a few more years.

To me it sounds about $1000.00 to high...I would say parts would be about $900...
What was wrong with the E-Brake cable? Do you live in a high-salt area?
I've never had to replace one of those.
I imagine that everything the dealer does is in 1 hour increments, but disc brakes on these Super Duties are really easy to change. Did they completely flush the brake fluid?
I do a lot of ag tire business with this shop. I didn't get an estimate. I felt it was high. I had planned on doing the work myself, but didn't want to tackle the ball joints and the alignment.
I do live in an area that uses a lot of salt. It is a standard transmission, so the e brake gets a lot of use. This truck spends most of its time with a gooseneck trailer hooked on to it. I was not billed for any brake fluid, so I doubt the system was flushed.

I don't think it was a dealer as the OP said a local shop..
Sorry about that, didn't mean to bag on dealer vs. independent shop rates.
I'm still having a hard time figuring out why an E-Brake cable needs replacement after only 53K miles. The one in my 1994 F-250 after 251K miles is still in fine shape and it also has a 5-spd manual. Maybe there was a problem with the OEM one? Was it frayed? Stretched?
It snapped, and the pedal dropped without resistance to the floor. It had been hanging up. I had attempted to free it up with wd-40 on two earlier occasions.
I am trying to hold the truck in position loaded. I farm some pretty rough terrain. I set the brake when I am parked on a hill and loading round bales on the trailer, or I am loading and unloading cattle that shake the trailer back and forth a bit. Maybe I am being too cautious, but I didn't want to loose the rig down a hill or have cattle escape out the gap if the trailer rolled.
I think I over paid as well. I don't mind a shearing, but I think this one drew blood. I am not one to argue over a bill. I'm not sure how to handle this. I want them to know I am not pleased, but I don't want to act like a jackass either.
I think you got gouged on this. Why do you use the e-brake so much? Put it in first or reverse.
I have an automatic and I use the parking brake almost every single time I park my truck. No point in having a 7000lb weight hang on your drive train if you can help it.
When I drove a manual I never relied on the gears to hold my vehicle. Ive had cars roll because they pop out of gear. You always hope it will hold but I won't trust it to hold my pride and joy in place if its possible for it to roll away.

Its really hard to argue the bill after the fact and had they given you a estimate before hand you could have shopped around. Right now not much you can do other than not use them anymore..

i don't think it's too much to ask for an itemized receipt to break it down.
