Question 98 F150 Help installing V6 4.2 Engine

The transmission is on the vehicle supported by a pipe. Do I need to jack the transmission up while lowering the engine to the vehicle?

I can't see it but the natural requirement is to be able to mate the motor with the transmission so the bell squarely meets all the way around without forcing.
Be sure the converter does not slide forward at anytime because it is [indexed] into the transmission front pump.
Anything happens here and you force it together, damage occurs the moment you crank the motor.
Good luck.

Can the engine be lowered to the mounting point without mating it to the transmission?

If there is room and no interference , yes.
What is this all about?
