I just bought a '78 F150 Ranger Lariat, affectionately known as Dirty *****, because that's what she has turned out to be. There is a lot of work that needs to be done before she is road ready so there for the seat shouldn't be high on my list, but with that being said.
She needs a new bench seat, the one in it has been used and abused and housed some furry rodents.
Would it be better to try and get it re-done or find a new one for it?
And if it is the latter, where do you find a bench seat?
Try craigslist near you or pic and pull yard. I think seats up to 96 will bolt in. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. If you want to stay stock any 73-79 seat will work.
I have been to the circle auto around here, and there isn't anything in the yard that age wise matches my truck. I am trying to keep it as close to original as I can..if that makes sense?
The seat that came in my truck (when it was new) was really nice, it was black with silver inserts (patches) on the back and seat, where someone would sit..
Tara-Leigh, welcome to the addiction!! Like hickory said, any of the bench seats will be a direct bolt in for ya (73-96 and the 97 F250 & F350). But if you want to keep it more "original" looking be prepared to for the high prices. SMS Fabric is the only place that I have found to have the "original" material for our loved ones, but they are VERY pricey!!
If you really don't care about keeping it original then the cheapest way to go will be craigslist (wrecked or parting out) or local JY...Probably your best bet for keeping it looking somewhat original without buying SMS material is to go to your local auto upholstery shop and talk with them about re-upholstering your current stock bench. The "Lariat" seats look great when done properly (factory original). Just guessing here, but to have a bench seat re-done with the Lariat style inserts will be close to the price of your truck if not more!!
I'd just try and find a decent used seat to get you by and fix anything else that the truck needs while in the meantime get a quote for redoing your stock seat the way you want and save up for it.
Like this by chance? Yes up to a 96 will bolt right in to your older frame. Fold down arm rest started in 89 (I think) and got better in design with a slip on 2 cup holder on the front of the seat edge around 91, 92.
Get a place to make you a slip on cover out of Carhartt type canvas, to be durable. The Walmart and auto store universal ones are not worth the money IMO.
I checked with a local shop to get mine redone and fix a broken spring. He say $400.00 should take care of it back to the original black . I had a 79 once and i use the rear seat from a 89 crew cab . It was one that was hardly ever used , just like new . Just had to use the tracks off of my old 79 seat to make it fit.
National parts depot sells a brand new bottom cushion. Somewhere around $200. I bought one because my old one was moldy, smelled like smoke and mouse pee. I am keeping my trucks as close to original as possible.
