I wonder if my 2010 F-250, 6.4L diesel Lariat is OBDII compliant. I plugged in my reader, turned on the ignition and the reader won't connect with the vehicle. Turned off the ignition switch waited for 15 plus seconds and retried. Still got a connection error message. What type of OBD reader do I need to have it read codes and reset check engine lights on my truck? Thanks in advance for your response
Of course the truck is OBDII compliant, that is the requirement.
The better question is what reader you might have and if it's CAN-Bus compliant. If it's an older unit, perhaps 10 years or so, it's too old. It is also necessary to have battery voltage on pin 16 of the OBDII port.
I am using an Autel MaxiScan MS509 OBD scanner. It is specifically an OBD2/EOBD instrument and works on Control Area Network (CAN). I was the chief of maintenance engineering on the F-117 stealth fighter for a number of years and am familiar with all sorts of engine condition and monitoring analysis equipment. I have had this F-250 for about 8 months and was just wondering if there might be something different in the OBD area on the diesels that I did not know about.
OBDII connector has 12VDC on pin 6. It seems like during the interrogation phase by the code reader it is not connecting with the on board computer and it gives me an "Error Loading" message.. My Autel OBD scanner is getting power from the vehicle.
I have a SCT tuner/scanner for my 2003 with a 5.4 gasser and I plugged it into my dads 2008 with a 6.4 diesel and it connected just fine so I don't think there is anything different in scanning the diesel, do you have access to another scanner to see if you get the same results?
I have a laptop based OBDII/EOBD scanner program that I use on my Porsche 986 for detailed scans and I also use the same handheld Altel MS509 scanner that I tried to use on the truck, on the Porsche. OBD/EOBD should be all the same specs so this might tell me if the problem is in the truck or the handheld scanner. Thanks for the replies. I'll post the results of my experiment.
