Did he describe how it died? Was it sudden, like the key was turned off, or did it die like it was running out of fuel?

There is a device low in the valley of the engine called an Injector Pressure Regulator (IPR). There is a tin nut that holds a coil in place, that coil is an electro-magnet that controls the drive pressure to operate the injectors. If the pressure is unstable, you could get enough intermittent fuel to smoke, but not enough to start. This is just a theory.

While traversing the tundra, the tin nut can work its way loose. Look at the IPR and make sure there is a nut threaded securely on the end. If it's missing, it's in the valley of the engine.

I told him to check that he hasn't got back to me yet. I changed the whole thing in my truck so I knew how to describe it to him

Good call. Since you neighbor Seattle (somewhat), are you watching the game?

That's kind of our friends in the North to offer support.

I think I want to keep my optimism in check, though. I saw what Seattle did to the 49'ers in the second half of the championship game, and I don't want to invite the receiving end of that little gift.
