Sunday I used the truck to haul wood and everything seemed fine. Monday afternoon it wouldn't start. I know very little about diesels. It cranks over fine and seems to be getting fuel because i get a bunch of smoke out of the tail pipe after cranking for a while. It don't even try to start. Does anyone have some ideas for me? I don't even know where to begin to look.

If is is below 40degrees where you are, you might look at this for help. If it is above 50 degrees there may be some other issues for us to look at.
The 'smoke' is unburnt fuel, did you give the Glow Plug Regulator enough time to heat up the Glow Plugs (about 30-90 seconds)?
Nope. To be honest I don't even know what the cps is. I remember reading soon after buying the truck about something that was common to go out and gave no warning and some people even kept a spare in the glove box. Is that the part you are talking about? Is there a way to test it?

It has 109,000 miles if that helps.
You can either replace it yourself.$25. (in on the front of the engine, near the water pump, crawl under the engine and look up) or... there is a recall at Ford..for the cps..(cam position sensor) and you can get it replaced for free..just call your local ford dealer and ask about the cam position sensor Recall and give them your VIN #..
Ok I just went out and tried it because i have been doing some searching on the cps and read to see if the tach moves while cranking. The tach didn't move but the truck fired up.
Its 70 now so now im wondering if it might be something with the glow plugs. I know sunday morning when i started it, it was pretty cold out because i remember coming in to let it warm up before i left. It may have been around 40 on monday afternoon when i tried to start it again. Would it be an all of a sudden thing for the glow plugs to stop working? Or could it still be the cps? Im going to call ford and see about the cps recall because i also have a speed control recall i need to take care of that i keep forgetting about.
For it to go from starting fine to not starting at all when cold overnight, I would look at your GPR. Pick up a Stancor relay for about $20. Easy to replace.
If it slowly started getting worse I would say some or all of your glow plugs. But this seems too sudden to be them.

I agree. If you have a volt/ohm meter, measure voltage at the GPR posts after first key on. Or you could jump the two large posts on the GPR(it will spark) for @ 30 seconds, then try starting. You could also plug in the heater a couple hours and see if it starts easier.
The tach movement doesn't work with the 02 and up trucks.
Also, if you are due for a oil change, switch to a syn like Shell Rotella 5w40...(walmart) Your engine will start quicker when the weather is cold.. and you can use it year round.. It costs more, but you can extend the time between oil changes.. Your injectors like good oil to operate properly..
See my gallery pictures for your GPR.. you should have about 11 volts on the two large lugs just after turning the key to start (no engine start) for about 2 minutes..if it is working properly.
Ok thanks guys. Im leaning toward the GPR and will test it this afternoon when i get home.
This place is the greatest. Without you guys I don't know what i would do. Last summer i tackled replacing my balljoints and without the help of FTE it would have never went as smooth as it did.
