Just got a 96 f250 4x4 with the 7.5 gas in it and It shifts hard into 2cd and 3rd due to it having code 628 or 128 I think which is excessive slip which You know means the tranny ups the pressure to try to save its self. Luckily from what I have read the 96 should have all the upgraded parts in it right?
Anyways, its got 200k miles on it and I know a old ford tranny guy who will rebuild it for $500 if I bring it to him and do some valve body tweaking. I think I have decided on just a stock rebuild kit off ebay for $175 because I do not think I need the red clutches and all that but not sure. Should I get a triple disc converter or a billet single disc?
I am not going to do to much more to the 460 maybe 20-30 horsepower in the future but I will tow with it in the hills 7-8 times a year. I will pull 4-7k lbs so not a real big load.
So like I said, should I upgrade or just go back stock. I am on a working mans budget so would like to stay under $600 for the parts. Thanks for any info
Until the transmission is completely torn down and inspected you wont know of all the parts you could need. There could be some "hard parts" that may need to be replaced as well. The 96 should have most of the important factory upgrades.
With a overhaul kit I would make sure a bushing kit is installed too, or at least the case, sun gear, direct drum and pump bushings replaced. Transgo makes a good shift kit for these also, it makes them shift like they should have from the beginning and really helps with the TCC system. The converter is something I would spend a few extra bucks for, one with a multi clutch and a billet cover, the cover is more important than a multi clutch, IMO.
Make sure the cooler system is clear and maybe install a better cooler if your budget allows.
I am replacing the radiator due to oil cooler leak and age and will add a bigger better cooler also. Why is the billet convertor so much better. I have read that I want furnace brazed fins but not sure why
I am going to get the kit that has all the bushings in it and also looking at the tugger kit to help firm up shifts.
