Help Removing Steering Upper Bushing
Is there a trick to removing the upper steering wheel bushing. The picture does not show it well but I am referring to the lock ring holding the steering column to the shaft. I has a inner and outer split on the bushing/ring. The shop manual just indicates remove the "upper bushing spring and bushing." I have a Redhead rebuilt steering box and I am half way to getting it installed.

3520 is the coil spring, 3517 is the bushing and 3518 is its nylon sleeve.
Both the bushing and sleeve are available from Ford.

It will be easier to see how things go together if you remove the three Phillips head screws and get the turn signal switch out of the way; you cannot remove the switch completely unless you remove the wires from the connector, but you can slide the wires up and lay the switch over to the side. There are two screws 180 degrees apart that will release the piece labeled 3511 in the diagram posted by Bill. It really depends on how complete of a steering column rebuild you want to do. Just undoing the T/S switch should allow you the vision to replace the tapered bushing.

Thank you Bill and Gavin.
Bill you will be proud, I did find and print the correct drawing from the catalog, but I could not locate parts listing in the other half of the catalog. The condition of end cap 38564 is questionable. Is it also avaible from Ford? How do you derive the complete part number?
I have a new turn signal assembly. so it is coming off anyway.
