My 1998 Explorer with 120,000 mile on it. The check light just came on. I have had several auto part stores plug in the scan tool and there were no error codes
I'm looking for the reset button location. I am also wondering should there be something missed by the scan tools, will the light activate should there be a real problem.
Were the stores having difficulty getting the scan tool to connect, or were the tools reporting that there are no diagnostic codes after a successful scan?
As mentioned above, there is no generic reset button. If the system causing the Check Engine Light (CEL) to come on stops reporting an issue, the light will go out after several drive cycles with no instance of the issue. But the CEL will not illuminate for no reason. The scan tools used by just about every parts store will only read powertrain diagnostic codes. There can be non-powertrain codes that cause the CEL to illuminate but cannot be accessed by a standard scan tool. For those, you'll need to find a professional scan tool.
I took the Explorer to a shop and was told there is are codes,.
P1309 Misfire monitor and a P0340, Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit
Bank 1 or Single Sensor.
Is this a major job, I am good with auto repairs, but is this something I should take to a shop or dealer ?
If you have SOHC 4.0, remove sensor at the front of left valve cover, clean off the sensor and see if that makes a change. Mine was dirty, oil, etc. and showing a CEL, clean it, then no CEL.
Thanks to all that replied. I wound up taking it to a local shop and the owner has the same Explorer. Turned there were two faulty sensors, With the oil change and tire rotation the bill was $199.90. Plus he washed all the salt, dirt and cleaned the interior.
I think I'll be using him again.
