Check Engine Light/Codes Question
Could codes appear in a scan tool when the check engine light is not on?
I've read where people have a CEL and a scan tool reports an engine miss. I feel like I have an engine miss on idle, but the CEL never comes on.

The CEL is turned on only if a problem is severe enough. Meanwhile, the computer is still trying to compensate for faults.
There are multiple tiers of fault codes, not all of which will set the CEL on.
If you suspect a misfire, pull the Mode 6 data and look at the misfire counts.. Of course, the el-cheapo scanners/readers cannot do this....
