Turbo Swap

I've been drooling over this Bell HFSB Turbo sold by DP-Tuner for some time now.
Bell HFSB Turbo (350-550hp) - Turbochargers - Turbo and Charge Air Upgrades - 1994.5 - 2003 Powerstroke 7.3L Truck - Ford Powerstroke
$1349.95 for the Turbo.....not bad
$24.99 for the exhaust downpipe adaptor.....fair
$1850.00 for the bolt in mounting kit.....holy ****

I could easily eliminate the turbo pedestal and EBV and fab a mounting bracket and some oil lines to get this thing in. However I do see some cold weather and the EBV does get a fair amount of use. So i want to keep the EBV. Any one with expierence, ideas, suggestions?

I understand the mounting kit is a highly specialized item and is probably worth the money, but I'd rather put that money towards upgrading the transmission.

That's why the 38R is such a popular turbo upgrade. Doesn't offer the power that this or the others offer, but it bolts right in and saves you a considerable amount of cash.

Nice turbo but if it was me I'd buy the hole kit. Do you have upgraded injectors? I wouldn't think you'd see much out of that turbo with out. Like Chris said the 38R should do you fine if money is tight then you can do the trans.

I'm currently running stage II injectors, Banks Cold Air and Technicooler, 4" exhaust, Swamps high performance IDM, and DP-Tuner(I may have forgotten something). I've thought about the 38R but the HFSB will leave me with room to grow if I choose too, plus the possibility of getting it in for less that $1500. I can be pretty creative with fabricating, but it's hard without getting my hands on the turbo first. I was hoping some one has done this before and could give me some insight.

The hypermax kit is not cheap, but changing from a reverse scroll turbo charger to a standard T-4 mount turbo is kinda complicated. The kit includes all new up pipes, new intercooler supply and return piping, new intake, new 4" intake pipe. Do a internet search on how to build a t-4 or t-4i mount.

Most of this seems to be fairly simple fab work. Modifying the intercooler tubes and up pipes should be fairly straight forward. The oil feed and drain tubes i can make with stainless steel lines and AN style fittings, and I have some ideas on the intake. Depending on how the turbo sits i could possibly modify the pedestal, but maybe not, and the other big challenge will be the y collector. Those are the only 2 parts I'm not completely confident I can do myself. I just hate to pay $1800 for a kit when there are only 2 parts I truly need(atleast thats how it seems).

I'll do some research into the T-4 mount, Thanks CGMKCM.

I just noticed what exactly you're referring to with the "reverse scroll" turbo. That adds a whole new challenge that i actually have no clue on how to address with the stock manifold at this point. Nice catch

Well with your sticks and all it should be a great set up. If you look on PHP web site the Gen 2 WW puts out 43 psi with the stock turbo on stage 1's. You mitt want to go that way just until you can save the money for the set up you want. Just a suggestion greg. Let us know what you do and how you like it!

I already have the Banks High-Boost compressor wheel, Quick Turbo Assembly, and a manually adjustable waste gate controller. I honestly haven't been that impressed with the Banks parts.

I'm in the planning and saving up stage right now. I'm just trying to figure out how custom this install is going to be.

Well the Banks wheel is just the WW set up. Clay makes a new design and Bobs Gen2 WW is on PHP web site and said to get rid of surge and pushes 43psi of boost with stage one injectors. So I was talking more on the line of Clay or Bobs wheels. Both great products. If you have Banks wheel, do you also have the 1.0 exhaust housing banks uses?
