Well...I crapped my pants. Sadly this happens more often than documented. We've driven through Northern Ontario and have often been nervous because of truck drivers habits. Our October trip was no exception. I drive at the speed limit and have 80000lbs or more riding my tail for 30 kms, then the driver has the nerve to give me the finger and other gestures. I'm glad I didn't see that one in particular stopped at a rest stop. I was pissed.
I hate driving the trans Canada by Dryden/Kenora in the winter, seen way too many close calls on that stretch of highway having growing up in this area....
Wow... I would need new undies after that... I hate when semis tail me, I'm always on edge when they're behind me especially when it's slippery out. The one day my dad had my truck here in Winnipeg and was passing a semi on the the inside lane on the perimeter and the semi started pulling into his lane! Lucky for him the dumby in the semi saw him and didn't squish him into the divider.
Can't imagine how often this happens on 11/17.
Wife took a trip in Nov to Sudbury to visit her Grandma. On the way back, emergency visit so they pretty much had to drive straight back for work, close to Kenora on the 2 laner they were passed by a semi truck. 1am, middle of a major snow storm..... Totally blinded the road right out. Luckily she was able to maintain her lane. She said all she saw behind her was a pile of headlights shining in all directions. Absolutely terrified her, her sister and her Mother. She phoned me pretty much right after it happend as it was very close to a rest stop around there. She said after pulling over, there wasn't a single vehicle go by for quite awhile after. Indicating a pile up of some sort we figure but can't confirm as she wasn't going to turn around and find out. She made it home safe and sound around 4am. Still white as a ghost I might add.
She was doing 80 at the time and already felt she was pushing it due to the long line up behind her.
I watch those car crash compilations all the time. It seems in Russia everyone has one. I think MPIC here should impliment some sort of rebait to drivers who want to further protect themselves by purchasing one of these. Reward program for people who turn in video resulting in charges/tickets for these people who clearly take reckless chances like this.
Just showed the wife the vid.......Can't repeat what she just said :P
Yeah I read those S Duncan comments also. I would happily eliminate his existence. That's a stupid logic he has. The trucks are governed/speed limited to 105km/h, while much of the highways through those parts of Ontario are speed limited 90/100km/h. I would take pleasure in seeing the Police or DOT target the large truck traffic but it seems they often turn a blind eye.
Maybe Grant could chime in here, as he works for a trucking outfit (maybe co-owns)...
I've spoken to one of the local DOT (heavy truck) guys. They're so limited with manpower/paperwork it's unreal he said. Had to weigh my truck when I got nailed 3 times in 2 months for my eX. He don't stop anything under 10,000GVW but we had a pretty good chat. The hwy scale on 59 stops alot of trucks, and he said many of them are walking a fine line safety wise. Most drivers I know, truck at night due to the least amount of traffic out there. With the log cops, speed limiters guys just do whatever they can to get miles on. I personally have alot of respect for many of them. Working at TransX for 17years I met and got to know many of the long term guys very very well. I'm sure it's gotten even worse than it was when I left the industry, Grant, chime in on this one bud........Unless......It was one of his units Just kiddin Grant. Smaller companies/owner operators (the one's I know) tend to spend alot of time maintaing their own vehicles AND themselves.
The problem I have with "guys having problems with the speed limiters" is that 95% of the time they're driving in 100km/h zones. MAXIMUM 100km/h. Yes, I've driven in excess of the speed limits, yes I've gotten tickets, but guess what? That's the law. 100km/h limit means that if you're doing 101km/h you're illegal. I realize that most law enforcements allow a 0-10km/h grace, often more, but that's like saying murder is ok as long as its not genocide...
Lets not forget that the posted limits are for ideal road conditions. Maybe 50% or less of all miles logged in Canada are under ideal conditions. Make hay while the sun shines. Its no different in the construction industry. I make a good living when the conditions are favorable. Winter, rain, and extreme winds, not so good...but I live with it. I work according to what the conditions allow. I'm not about to be endangering someone's life because of $$.
A lot of what S Duncan said is correct. I can't really comment on the speed limiter issue because my truck doesn't have one. But we do have one truck that's governed, and I did have something similar to what Duncan described happen to me. A car had pulled onto the highway in front of me (not so close that it was a definite mistake, but I would have probably waited) so I moved over to pass them. But before I got by them, I had hit the governor AND they had got up to speed, so it was a stalemate.
But he is right about the insurance side of things. If that happened here, without the dashcam, MPI would deem that a single vehicle accident. The video evidence might change things though I'm not sure.
In that case, Trevor, it was the carelessness of the vehicle driver that pulled in front of you that could have caused an accident...
Yeah, I should've clarified that in the second part of my post I meant the accident in the video, not my hypothetical accident. That was just to show the plausibility of the governor situation.
