Brothers and sisters with small ones, PLEASE PLEASE make sure that your child pays CLOSE attention when crossing any street or intersection, crosswalk, stop signal or not. A friend of mine lost his 11 year old son yesterday afternoon when he rode his skate board directly in front of a big rig going through town. He was in a crosswalk but the driver said he came out of nowhere and could not stop in time. So sad to loose such a young soul.
In a BLINK..........it is over. Sad story for sure.
I don't know if it is me, or other people are just that STUPID. Just last week I'm driving along a rural road, 45 mph speed limit. I come up on a 5-6? yr old girl on one of those little tiny push scooters right on the edge of the white line. "Dad" was standing in the yard, apparenty too dense to related to how fast she could be gone by someone texting or yak'n on the phone and drift to the edge of the road. WTH would you allow someone that small to play ANYWHERE near the road. I don't care how "out in the woods" you are. You have acres of land, how about moving her to the back yard?
Last night, again on a rural road, 35 mph, two young teen girls out on there push scooters playing on the white line. Not going anywhere, just screwing around on the edge of the road. GTF off the road.
I don't know, it sure seems like kids these days are NOT told how to do things right. When I rode my bike, I stayed the heck away from traffic, and gave them wide berth. Now, they dare you to see how close you can be. I get teenagers around work that dare you to hit them. They will cross in front of you(jaywalk) and see how slow they can walk, looking over their shoulder sneering at you. It happens A LOT!!! Not just once.
I am an avid biker, both road and mountain. I rarely ride the road bike on the roads around here due to drivers that don't pay attention. I've had two near misses in the last year and I'm through tempting fate.
Hydro man, very sorry to hear about your friends loss. I have 4 young kids and also run a landscape business so my kids are around my machines all the time. It doesn't matter how well you train them, it only takes 1 second for them to forget. We mow at several busy gas stations and there have been numerous times that I've been trimming islands and stepped backwards into the lot, just in time to realize there's a car that stopped for me, thank God! My prayers are going up for your friend and his family!
That's a horrible loss. I couldn't nor would I want to imagine that fate to any child. Condolences to your friend
Living on the farm with two kids and there friends over quite often has put me on my toes to make sure everything is clear. I just wish others would pay the same attention
Thank you to all. This was not intended to be a request for sympathy, but thanks just the same. I just wanted to give folks a "heads up" about training your kids (as well as yourself) to be aware. As Mowing Man pointed out that just because you are in a "traffic controlled intersection" you are not safe. I was in my local "big city" yesterday and at almost every light there were at least 3-4 cars that blantantly ran the red light, crosswalks and all. Anyone merely trusting the lights and paint on the street would be in deep noonie to do so.
Take care all.
