Today I was driving my van, and heard what sounded like something hitting a small metal fan. didnt give it much thought honestly. Then as I am turning onto our road my brake light comes on and the pedal is hard as a rock. Almost missed my turn because the brakes barely worked.
I am suspecting a vacuum leak or a bad booster, but I have to wonder if that sound I heard earlier in the day could be something related that I am unaware of.
sounds like your booster either failed or isn't getting vacuum. possibly the check valve to the booster failed? it would be a simple test to pull the check valve (that little ell fitting where the vac line connects to the booster) and see if it gets a vacuum with the engine running. it should suck pretty good. if you have good vacuum there, then it sounds like a bad booster.
on second thought, is your van a diesel? the diesels had a sensor that will trip the brake light for loss of vacuum. i've killed about 4 vacuum pumps in the 3 years i've had my van, and when it happens, braking sucks!
Not really.... just remember the last bolt on the bottom has to be removed by HAND..then reinstalled BEFORE the new pulley is installed ....otherwise you will NEVER get it on ......
I have a PSD...First Generation...should be the same as yours...simple MISTAKE TO AVIOD...
Good luck
my IDI is on v-belts, whereas yours is on a serpentine belt, but mine is 2 bolts to remove the bracket from the engine, disconnect the hose, and slide the pump out the bottom. then deal with pressing the pulley off and on and moving the bracket to the new pump. its really simple and i've done it in the parking lot of the parts store
I wouldn't think your steering would be affected unless your vacum pump is bad.
I had a bad booster when I bought my van. but steering wasn't affected just brakes. although I did have a new vacum pump installed before I flew in to drive my van back home.
crazy thing was I drove from Maine to Montana with one good brake press. after that is was rock hard. when I got home i replaced the booster and all is good.
