Every since I acquired my 2000 Ford F250 5.4, I've had ignition coil problems. The problems at first were just two failed coils. So I got some cheap, after market coils(from Ebay) and for about a month, my truck drove GREAT. And then one coil failed, and then two.
So.....
I am a poor college student and I don't have the money to buy new, Motorcraft coils from Ford(around $800). So basically, I was wondering if anybody could give me some insight on some other after market coils and if any of them would be good for my truck. Maybe Granatelli? Jegs?
I can't point you to any particular brand, but did your cheap replacements fail?
Two of the coils have failed thus far. Now though, the truck always has a small miss. I've changed the spark plugs, so I'm fairly positive that it's the coils.
The were $75 off of Ebay. Made in China or Japan. Basically, I got what I paid for.
Motorcraft only.
I have Accels on a couple of my Mustangs and they have crapped out on me. MSDs are not bad, but you will feel no gains from them. Motorcraft is the only way to go. I have run them well over 100K miles.
I would also recommend going with Ford OEM Motorcraft coils. They are pricey but really,,, in the end they do seem to work best in the long run on these modular V8 & V10 engines. I'm sure other "quality" brands are fine, but the Motorcraft coils are time tested and generally get the best reviews over all.
I do have a line on a fellow that can set you up with a set of new Motorcraft coils at a very reasonable price if you want to look into it. There also was an ebay store that sells packages of 8 and 10 coils very cheap and they state "life time warranty" you might want to look into. If you do a search here at FTE you should be able to find a link to it. If not, it shouldn't be too tough to sort through an ebay search to find it.
