A guy in my office just had this issue with his older model chevy avalanche. apparently on those trucks it's a known issue.
Anyway, he sourced the little stepper motors (on ebay) that the speedo, tacho, and other needle gauges use and got someone here to re-solder the new stepper motors in. It fixed his issue.
It sounds like you have the same thing going on with yours.
Someone on this forum can probably give you the motor part numbers.
The thread I read talked about the cluster face warping when it was cold. There was one poster that went as far as sanding the back off the needle. He had to be extremely cautions because the needle wouldn't come off.
I found a tsb on this issue. Seems 05-07 had cluster issues. I also found some services for about $100 to fix issue, they replace the stepper motors. I would like to fix this myself if possible.
